Matthew Heffron

Senior Counsel
Biography

Matt Heffron, Senior Counsel for Thomas More Society, has been a trial attorney since graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in 1984, where he served as associate editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. He began his law practice with a commercial litigation firm in Helena, Montana, and eventually became a statewide special prosecutor for the Montana Attorney General’s Office. For many years, he was a federal prosecutor with the United States Attorney’s Office in Phoenix, Arizona, where he tried numerous complex criminal jury trials and eventually was appointed Deputy Chief for the Criminal Division. He was a frequent speaker on federal trial practice at Department of Justice seminars.

In 1998, he returned with his growing family to his hometown, Omaha. For the next 20 years, he litigated complicated commercial and banking cases, together with major trucking accidents and white-collar criminal defense.

Matt’s collaboration with Thomas More Society began in 2006, partnering with future Thomas More Society Senior Counsel Martin Cannon to successfully defend the late pro-life advocate Father Norman Weslin in one of the earliest victories in a federal FACE (Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances) Act prosecution. Thomas More Society founder, Tom Brejcha, repeatedly provided expert consultation in what was the beginning of a strong collaboration and friendship.

In 2011, Heffron, Cannon, and several other Omaha-based attorneys accepted an invitation to start the Omaha branch of Thomas More Society, working primarily on a volunteer basis. In early 2019, Heffron accepted an offer to work full-time, jumping at the opportunity to focus on cases in the Midwest and nationally that contribute to Thomas More Society’s mission of defending life, family and freedom.
